Before starting something new, I ask my student what they remember from last time — no reteaching, just recall. It’s one small piece of how I approach every lesson.
Gradual release: I do, we do, you do
It’s the model behind most well-designed curricula, and it’s what one-on-one time is uniquely good at. A classroom teacher paces for the average student. I don’t.
I Model It
Before a student tries a problem, I model one out loud — explaining the steps and the thinking behind each decision.
We Work Through It Together
We solve a problem side by side. I guide with questions rather than answers — catching mistakes before they get practiced and baked in.
They Work Independently
The student works independently while I observe. Real understanding shows up when they can execute without support — and I'm right there if something breaks down.

And when it’s time for the SAT, you don’t start over
Homeschooled applicants get looked at differently. Without a conventional transcript, admissions offices can lean harder on test scores — and some colleges require them from homeschoolers even while staying test-optional for other applicants.
That’s the part most families don’t see coming until junior year. I earned a 1520 on the SAT myself, have helped a student gain 220 points, and have taught homeschool math from fractions up. Same tutor, same relationship, all the way through.
